Today’s pickup truck market is more versatile than at any other time in history. Designing these trucks for construction, agriculture and retail markets means there are a staggering array of options to choose from.  Finding the right truck for your needs can be difficult! We have compiled a list of what we feel are the essential factors to consider when picking the perfect pickup (say that fast 5 times).

Budget

These days any purchase we make, whether big or small, needs to fit into our budget and the pickup truck market spans a wide price range.  For example, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma starts at $31,500 while the Ram 2500 HD fully loaded will be close to $100,000.  All the considerations that we will talk about in this article will affect the cost of your truck, so the first thing you will want to do is establish how much you are willing to spend.

Size

Not all trucks are created equal.  You will want to consider your needs, lifestyle and where you live.  Your midsize trucks will usually have a smaller cab and cargo bed size, will be more fuel efficient, and have a smaller price tag than their larger counterparts.  They will be easier to maneuver in tight spaces such as parking lots or city driving.  However, they will not be able to tow as much.  If you plan to regularly tow 12,000 pounds or carry 3,000 pounds of cargo you will need a full-size truck.  The heavier the classification the better the truck is at towing and hauling, but as those ratings rise the truck’s driving behavior and ride quality typically declines. That makes light-duty pickups the more practical choice for most folks, and their impressive capabilities ensure they’re one of the most versatile types of vehicle you can buy.

Cab Length

When you step inside the dealership there are generally going to be three cab sizes to choose from.  Regular or Standard cab will represent the smallest of these three options, only accommodating 2 or 3 people.  Extended or Quad cab trucks will normally have a smaller rear door and small rear row of seats.  Leg room in this row will be limited and probably not the best choice for longer drives.  Crew cabs represent the largest and most comfortable option.  With four full size doors this cab will have ample leg room and storage space making it the best option for your “daily-driver.”

Bed Length

Just like with cab length your intended use for your truck will determine what length bed you need.  Typically, a larger cab size will mean smaller bed length.  Opting for a short truck bed means sacrificing carrying capacity for enhanced maneuverability, making it ideal for urban dwellers or those transporting everyday cargo. Standard truck bed sizes offer a balanced option — neither too large nor too small — perfect for individuals handling typical cargo loads and occasional heavier items.

Engines (The Fun Part)

Most pickup trucks offer two or more engine options for you to consider. We understand that some of you may adhere strictly to the tradition of having a V8 under the hood. We completely understand. But, if you’re open to exploring other options, you’ll be able to find pickup trucks with four- and six-cylinder engines able to deliver ample power for your needs. The choice ultimately depends on your preferences and budget. And, if you have decided on a full-size truck, you’re in luck because you’ll have a wide range of options when it comes to your engine. Additionally, some models of pickup trucks may offer the option of a diesel engine. It’s also important to remember that while diesel engines offer certain benefits, such as fuel efficiency and towing capability, they incur higher fueling and maintenance costs over time.
